Twenty-six cadets took the Firefighter's Oath Thursday night after six months of training that would make most of us tap out by lunch.

The newest recruit class completed EMT training plus fire suppression, search and rescue, hazmat response, vehicle extrication, rope rescue, and firefighter survival skills before Judge Sherry Paty administered their oath at Bayside Baptist Church. They'll start immediately at the department's 20 fire stations across the city, working alongside veteran crews. "These firefighters are the future of our department," CFD said.

One neighborhood, dozens of resources, and a ribbon to cut. The City's Department of Community Development is opening its first Community Resource Hub at the East Lake Community Center on Monday, July 27, from 2:30-6 p.m. The hub bundles educational resources, health and wellness services, workforce development, financial assistance, and family support under one roof through local partnerships. It's the first of six hubs planned citywide. "We're creating easier access to the services and support that help individuals, families, and neighborhoods thrive," said Cedric Henson, Administrator of the Department of Community Development. A freshly paved quarter-mile stretch at Stringer's Ridge Preserve is officially open, and it's just the first phase of a multi-year plan to make one of Chattanooga's favorite outdoor spots safer and easier to access. The City's Department of Parks and Outdoors cut the ribbon on the path, which runs from the Cherokee Trail trailhead to the Stringer's Ridge overlook. Next up: wayfinding signage, benches, and dog waste stations in year two, then parking and access upgrades in year three.

Chattanooga is settling into full summer mode this week, hot, sticky, and never too far from a pop-up storm. Thursday is the closest thing to a break, mostly sunny with just an afternoon shower chance. Friday and Saturday climb into the upper 80s with the best odds of an afternoon thunderstorm, so keep an eye on the radar if Nightfall or the hike is on your list. Sunday eases back down slightly, though the humidity isn't going anywhere. Sunscreen in the morning, umbrella by the afternoon, that's the move all weekend.
