Hey friends, happy Thursday! Future homeowners just got some very good news, every kindergartner in Hamilton County is about to score a free day at the museum, and one giant table is about to take over MLK Boulevard for Thanksgiving. Add a weekend full of haunted trails, candy corn chaos and a full on tattoo festival, plus two new spots we cannot stop thinking about for dinner, and we think this might be one of our favorite issues yet.
Let's get to it!

Building a path to homeownership in Chattanooga
🏠 Habitat for Humanity's Future Homeownership Application Opens October 18
Big news for anyone dreaming about owning a home right here in Chattanooga. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga is opening the first step of its Future Homeowner application process on Sunday, October 18, and it stays open through Saturday, October 31. If you or someone you know has been hoping to put down roots, this is the moment to pay attention.
To be considered, interested individuals and families need to submit the online Pre Qualifying Questionnaire by 11:59 p.m. on October 31. The program is built for individuals and families with low to moderate incomes, and applicants will need to meet requirements around housing need, financial ability and a willingness to partner with Habitat along the way. Review the eligibility requirements and sign up to be notified when the questionnaire opens at habichatt.org/own.
🎨 All Hamilton Co. Kindergarten Students Get a Free Creative Discovery Museum Pass
Every single kindergartner in Hamilton County Schools is getting a free one time pass to the Creative Discovery Museum, and honestly, what a gift. This marks the fourth year in a row that Hamilton County government, the schools and the museum have teamed up to make it happen. About 3,450 kids will have their passes in hand by Friday, October 9, plenty of time to use them over fall break if families want to.
Each pass covers free admission for the student plus up to three guests, so a family of four gets in free, and it stays valid all the way through June 30, 2027. While you are planning your visit, mark your calendar for two new exhibits too, Winter Playland opens November 7 and Viva Mexico follows on January 16. Full story here.
🦃 Volunteers Needed for Free Thanksgiving Potluck in Chattanooga
If you love this city and you love a good potluck, Gratefull needs you. This free Thanksgiving potluck temporarily takes over MLK Boulevard every year, and this time it lands on Thursday, November 19, from 11:30am until 1:30pm, a week ahead of the actual holiday.
Picture one long table running straight down the middle of the street, bringing the whole city together for a shared meal. River City Company is looking for hundreds of volunteers to help set up tables, serve food, greet guests and keep things running smoothly throughout the event. If you have a few hours to give, register to volunteer for Gratefull and be part of it.

Clean Landscaping
🍃 This Fall Is Going to Be Short, and Your Yard Is Not Ready for What Comes After It
Southern Tennessee does not really do a long fall. A few good weeks of cool mornings and warm afternoons, then winter shows up uninvited and stays. Whatever your yard was not ready for is the thing that does not make it to spring.
Beds that never got cleared trap moisture against your foundation all winter. Shrubs that do not get pruned now carry dead wood right into ice and wind season. Soil that never got turned over just sits there starving until you are fixing it in April instead of enjoying it. None of that waits for you to get around to it.
C&C Nursery and Landscape knows what a Chattanooga yard needs before winter hits, bed cleanup, pruning, plant installation and full redesigns, all done while the ground is still workable. Skip the spring scramble entirely.
Right now winter projects are 10% off, but the ground is not staying soft forever and neither is this deal.

👩🍳 Fall Break Is Four Days Long and You Do Not Have a Plan Yet

Future chefs in the kitchen at Sweet and Savory
Fall break hits Tuesday, October 13 and runs through Friday, four straight days with no school, and if you have not nailed down what your kid is doing with that time, the couch and a screen are about to make that decision for you.
The Sweet and Savory Fall Break Camp fills every one of those days, 9am to 1pm, ages 8 to 13, hands on in a real kitchen the whole time. No sitting and watching, Chef has them cooking a brand new menu every single day: blueberry lemon muffins and pumpkin bread, a rustic Italian spread, cream puffs and eclairs, and tamales. Lunch and drinks are covered, so you are not even packing a lunch all week.
Beyond the food, they walk away with real kitchen skills, following a recipe, mise en place, proper knife and kitchen safety, portioning, and plating their own food, the kind of confidence that does not come from a tablet.
Drop off is 8:50 to 9am, pick up 1 to 1:10pm, and spots for ages 8 to 13 are going fast, this fills up every break.

Where To Eat
OX2 Buns & Noodles: Okay friends, this one might be our favorite find in a while. OX2 Buns and Noodles was an absolute win from start to finish. The buns alone make the drive worth it, soft, hot, fluffy and stuffed with filling, the kind of bite that makes you understand immediately why you should have ordered three more. Then came the fried rice with that beautifully glazed duck, and it was ridiculous in the best way, rich, savory and clearly not interested in letting anyone leave hungry. Everything looked as good as it tasted, and sharing buns straight out of the steamer made the whole meal feel like an event. If we lived closer, the staff would know us by name, and probably worry a little about how often we showed up.

Roasted Ducks fresh off the line at OX2
The Milky Cow: Friends, dessert just got a serious upgrade. We tried the Biscoff cheesecake, the cinnamon biscuit and the cinnamon rolls at The Milky Cow, and everything was so fresh it was almost unfair. No notes, no hesitation, this is officially our new favorite sweets stop and we will absolutely be back. We also grabbed the smores brownie and a pizza roll, and we tasted a little of each in the car before turning right back around for more to take home. That alone should tell you everything you need to know.

Fresh bake at The Milky Cow

That's a wrap, friends. Walk the Haunted Trail, dress up your pup for Spooky Paws, grab some buns at OX2, and go make some noise in this beautiful little city of ours. Know someone who needs this forwarded their way? Do it, they will thank you. Catch you next Tuesday 💛
